Hi crafty friends! Today I am sharing an A6 size, shadow box card showcasing the Lawn Fawn I Like Cute Moths stamp set and I Like Cute Moths coordinating die set. I love the adorable artwork of this stamp set and decided I wanted to create a fun Halloween card utilizing these super sweet moth stamps as well as some other supporting products from Lawn Fawn and a couple from Spellbinders.
Building the Card Base
For the card base, I cut three pieces of cardstock (two brighter blue pieces and one navy piece) to measure 4-1/2” x 6-1/4”. I also cut two pieces of the brighter blue cardstock to measure 1-1/2” x 6-1/4” and used my Scor-Buddy to score the long lengths of each of the two panels at 3/8”, ¾”, and 1-1/8”. After scoring, I folded the cardstock panels so that they resembled a long “M” and reinforced the folds with a bone folder – these two panels will serve as the sides of my shadow box, pop-up card base.
Building the Background
For my background, I started with one of the brighter blue pieces of A6 size cardstock that I cut for the card base above and ink blended clouds across the panel using Lawn Fawn’s Slimline Cloudy stencil and Tim Holtz’s Uncharted Mariner Distress Oxide Ink and Black Soot Distress Oxide Ink. Once the clouds were stenciled across the cardstock panel, I used Black Soot Distress Ink and a Simon Hurley Small Blending Brush to add ink blending to the outer edges of the cardstock panel to add depth and interest. Next, I mixed Altenew Enchanted Gold Shimmer Relief Paste with a few drops of water and spattered it across the cloud-inked panel, as well as the remaining two A6 cardstock panels, with a small paint brush for a starry effect. Using the largest aperture die from the Spellbinders Tunnel Clouds die set, I die cut an aperture into the center of the ink blended cardstock panel. Next using the second largest aperture die, I die cut an aperture in the center of the non-ink blended, bright blue cardstock panel. I also used the moon die from this die set and die cut the moon from Altenew’s Citrine glitter cardstock from the Altenew Gilded Glitter Cardstock Set and die cut the clouds die from translucent vellum.
I added ¼” Scor-Tape to the two outer sides of both M-shaped side panels that I created when I started building the card’s base. I removed the adhesive backing and adhered one side of the side panel to the left, back side of the cloud-inked card front and did the same with the M-shaped side panel on the right side of the card front. Next, I removed the adhesive backing paper from the last two side panel pieces and adhered them to the other bright blue piece of cardstock that has the aperture in it, but this time I adhered the “M”/side panel to the edge of the front of the cardstock panel which sandwiches the side panels between the two bright blue, aperture card panels. Lastly, I added Altenew ½” Black Instant Dimension Foam Tape to the back side of the pop-up, shadow box card panels and adhered them to the front of the navy, splattered cardstock panel for added lift and dimension.
Creating the Focal Points
For the cute moths and their accessories, I used the Lawn Fawn I Like Cute Moths stamp set and stamped the moths, stars, lantern and moon onto a piece of Copic-friendly, white cardstock using Lawn Fawn Jet Black Ink with the assistance of my MISTI stamping tool. Once the images were stamped and the ink dried, I colored the images with Copic Sketch alcohol markers in these color combinations:
Moths: (Sakura Stardust Clear Glitter Gelly Roll #700 on wing accents)
Orange: Copic Sketch Markers YR18, YR02, E01
Blue 1: Copic Sketch Markers B97, B45, B21
Blue 2: Copic Sketch Markers B39, B37, B34
Red: Copic Sketch Markers R89, R59, RV29
Pink: Copic Sketch Markers R35, R21, R00
Lantern: Copic Sketch Markers C8, C6, C4, YR18, YR02 (UniBall Signo Gold Pen)
Witch Hats: Copic Sketch Markers C8, C6, C4 (the hat bands I coordinated with the moth wings)
Stars: UniBall Signo Gold Pen
Once all the images were colored, I used the Lawn Fawn I Like Cute Moths die set to die cut the images except for the stars and I used scissors to fussy cut those since I didn’t want a white border around them.
Creating the Sentiment
For the sentiment, I used the Lawn Fawn Giant Hocus Pocus die set and die cut it once from black glitter cardstock, once from plain black cardstock, and once from matte metallic gold cardstock. I used Bearly Art Precision Craft Glue to adhere the plain black and gold cardstocks together (the black one simply provides stability) and glued the black glitter cardstock on top of the gold one and offset it just a bit so I could see the gold shadow behind the black glitter sentiment.
Assembling the Card
I added liquid glue behind the die cut of the moon and adhered it to the upper right corner of the card front. I used a combination of liquid glue and Scrapbook Adhesives Black 3D Foam Squares for the moth die cuts and the sentiment. After I adhered the moths and lantern, I colored the white edges of the die cuts with Copic Sketch Marker B39 to help the die cuts appear borderless and applied a thin coat of Ranger Glossy Accents to the glass part of the lantern. For the clouds, I added tiny bits of liquid glue to the areas that would contact the card front and gently positioned them into place to keep from smearing glue unnecessarily, trimmed off the edges that extended beyond the card dimensions, and outlined them using a clear glitter Sakura Gelly Roll pen. I wanted to add some bats as embellishments, so I used the bat die from the Spellbinders Halloween City Holiday Decorations die set and die cut three of them from black glitter cardstock and used the black foam squares to adhere them onto the card front. My last touch was adding the tiny star images that were in the Lawn Fawn I Like Cute Moths stamp set that I fussy cut and placed them where I thought looked good then adhered them with glue. Once completed, I added a white cardstock panel that measured 4.25” x 6” to the back side of the card front and that will be where I write my message for the recipient – no folded card base required.
